Point of view

When taking pictures, it makes a huge difference when you consider your point of view. Just changing your angle can make or break a photo.

For example, here is a picture of the food table that I took at a baby shower I went to yesterday. Standard point of view, dead on.

That’s kind of a boring picture. In fact, the table actually looks a bit empty.

I moved around to the end of the table, looking for a point of view that might make the table look like there was more food.

Wow! Suddenly it looked like the table had more food than before! In actuality, nothing had changed… other than my point of view.

Here’s a different angle. The goal here was not to make the table look more full, but to add interest to the photo. It does kind of look like the table is from a cruise in a major storm though. Any moment the dishes might be sliding off the table.

This photo works better. The flowers add a focal point with the blurry cupcakes in the foreground. It also looks like the table is full of food.

Changing the angle and view of your camera lens can give many interpretations of the same scene. Have fun and experiment!
